Saint George

History
Saint George location took its name from the nearby church of Saint George the “Thalassinos” or “Thalassitis” (Seaman). It is near the biggest beach in south Santorini 12km from the capital city Fira (Thira).
Santorini has rich history as a crossroad and succession point of many civilizations. The Akrotiri excavations show that there were inhabitants on the island from the post Neolithic period. About 1613 BC the biggest volcanic explosion in history sank the central part of the island creating a huge crater, the Caldera.
“Callisti”, “Strogili”, Thira are some of the names of the island from the ancient times till nowadays. These names as part of the history of the island are complementary with the natural beauty of modern Santorini which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
